Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus participated in the Office for the Aging’s sixth annual Orange County Senior Health and Fitness Day at Thomas Bull Memorial Park in Montgomery on Wednesday.
Neuhaus was joined at the event by Orange County Sheriff Carl E. DuBois, District Attorney David Hoovler and County Clerk Annie Rabbitt.
“Staying fit is important for seniors’ overall wellbeing and Orange County’s Senior Health and Fitness Day is a great event to help keep them active,” Neuhaus said. “The County’s Office for the Aging is always reaching out to our older adult residents with resources to help them stay fit and healthy. I enjoyed being at Thomas Bull Memorial Park today and having the opportunity to speak with so many seniors about their lives and interests.”
The purpose of Orange County Senior Health and Fitness Day is to encourage seniors to exercise, eat well and have fun. Throughout the day, Healthy Orange, part of the Orange County Department of Health, conducted screenings and distributed information. Local businesses, healthcare providers and vendors also participated. The day also included healthy cooking demonstrations, master gardening demonstrations, a fitness walk and other games and activities. Lunch for guests at the event was donated by ShopRite Supermarkets, Inc.
National Senior Health and Fitness Day takes place in May in honor of Older Americans Month. The goal of the initiative is to keep older Americans healthy and fit. It is the country’s largest annual health promotion event for older adults.
“It was a wonderful day,” said AnnMarie Maglione, Director of Orange County’s Office for the Aging. “This event gets bigger and better every year. It’s a wonderful resource for the seniors in this community and I thank County Executive Neuhaus for being such a big part of its success. It’s wonderful to see everyone come together for the good of our seniors.”
The Orange County Office for the Aging is committed to meeting the special service needs of Orange County’s senior population and their families and friends who care for them. The primary goal of the Office for the Aging is to maintain the dignity, well-being and independence of senior citizens, serving as an advocate and community partner.
