Family Services hosts 10th Annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes Event
Bringing the Community Together to End Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence
This annual event calls on the community to stand up against domestic abuse, sexual assault and gender violence. And, it is more important than ever, as the current pandemic increases the vulnerability of many survivors who are sheltering at home with their abusers and cut off from the support of family and friends.
Family Services has been providing support to survivors throughout the pandemic and continues to be a 24-7 resource to the community.
At any time from October 1 – 15th, the Walk A Mile Committee invites everyone in the community to choose how to Walk their Walk. Families and friends are asked to form Walking Teams and commit to their Walk in any number of ways – at our live, in-person event, or in your own home, your backyard, your neighborhood, at your office or other safe space. Sharing photos and videos of these various kinds of Walks with Family Services on social media will allow everyone to “come together” and be included in the larger effort.
For the in-person, Community Walk, Family Services partnered with the Dutchess County Rail Trail, where people will be able to walk with safety and distance on the Rail Trail at any time between 10:00am and 2:00pm.
Walkers should stop by the information table at the entrance to the Rail Trail off Titusville Road at Golds Gym in Poughkeepsie to sign in. Walkers should remember their masks and maintain social distancing while on the Rail Trail. Parking is available in the Golds Gym Poughkeepsie lot for all participants.
And, for the first time, our event is holding an Online Auction. The Walk A Mile Online Auction offers a wide array of affordable items and gift certificates from local businesses, artists, restaurants and merchants. Raising awareness and funds will support survivors’ immediate needs, and help Family Services continue to offer therapeutic programs and youth education to help prevent future violence.
All funds raised stay in the Hudson Valley.
Some will be walking the Walk in heels, a tradition that has carried over from the earliest days of the international Walk A Mile in Her Shoes® events. Walk in the shoes that best represent those you walk for whether its sneakers, boots, flip flops, or heels.
A final online event on October 15th will bring everyone together one last time to share videos and photos from all the Walks taken. Prizes will be awarded for fun categories like Best Shoes, Most Creative Video, and others.
