Orange County to host hazmat and pharmaceutical collection events on June 4-5th in Port Jervis
Goshen, N.Y. – Orange County will host a Hazardous Waste collection event for businesses, municipalities, school districts, and farms on Friday, June 4th at Orange County Transfer Station #3 and Household Hazardous Waste and Operation Safe Scripts Pharmaceutical Collections for Orange County residents on Saturday, June 5th at the Port Jervis High School lower parking lot.
“These events provide an opportunity to dispose of unwanted and potentially hazardous chemicals that people often accumulate over the years in a safe, environmentally conscious way,” Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus said. “I hope that residents take advantage of this cost-free opportunity to clear their homes of unnecessary and potentially dangerous products.”
“Due to safety precautions taken because of the COVID-19 pandemic, these events will be organized to ensure the safety and well-being of County residents and employees,” Neuhaus added.
The steps taken to ensure safety for all involved are as follows:
- All workers will wear a mask and proper PPE.
- Attendees are encouraged to come one person per vehicle and show their proof of residency through a closed window.
- Attendees are not to leave their vehicles unless in the case of an emergency.
- Residents shall pack their materials in the rear of their vehicles for workers to handle.
- Containers will not be returned to prevent the potential for transmission.
The June 4th event is for businesses, schools, farms, and municipalities only and will be held at Orange County Transfer Station No. 3 at 86 Tow Path Road in Port Jervis. Pre-registration is required and the cost for disposal will be determined by the vendor based on the type and amount of waste to be disposed of (up to 220 pounds per vehicle). Drop off times will be scheduled by the vendor. A registration form can be found on the County website by clicking on the “Household Hazardous Waste” tab at http://www.orangecountygov.com/efs. Registrations will be accepted until Friday, May 21st.
The June 5th event is free for Orange County residents with proof of residency (driver’s license or utility bill with Orange County address) and will be held at the lower parking lot of Port Jervis High School, which is located at 10 Route 209. Deputies from the County Sheriff’s Office will be on hand to collect unwanted over the counter and prescription medication. Businesses, schools, farms, and municipalities must register for the June 4th event and may not attend the June 5th collection event.
